Ball mills

Planetary grinding mills have long been part of Fritsch’s range. Since the 1980s, this technology has replaced outdated grinding techniques such as mortar mills, centrifugal ball mills and disc vibrating mills. The high efficiency, ease of operation, grinding speed and the final fineness to be achieved are the major advantages of these machines. The material of the grinding jars and grinding balls is chosen according to the hardness of the material to be ground, desired final fineness and requirements in terms of contamination by the grinding assembly. Cups with a volume of 20 ml to 500 ml are available in combination with grinding balls with diameters ranging from 0.1 mm to 40 mm (depending on the device and material). Grinding sets (cups + balls) are available in agate, sintered corundum, silicon nitride, zirconium oxide, hardened stainless steel and tungsten carbide. Accessories for grinding under inert gases or at controlled temperature and pressure are also available.

Pulverisette 7 premium

The Fritsch Pulverisette 7 premium is the first planetary mill specifically for grinding in the nanometre or submicron range. Due to the extreme grinding conditions that can be applied (speed of up to 1100 rpm and accelerations of up to 95 g), exceptional attention was paid to safety and ease of use during development, including automatic recognition of grinding jars, stabilisation detection, control via bluetooth or from PC, automatic closure of the grinding chamber, etc… This makes it possible to carry out grindings below the 100 nm limit. This device is therefore rightly known in the market as “nanomill”.

Pulverisette 5 premium

The Fritsch Pulverisette 5 premium line was developed as the big brother of the pulverisette 7 premium line for rapid wet and dry grinding, mechanical synthesis, mixing and homogenisation of larger sample quantities in the nano range. With double motor power (2.2 kW) and a new clamping system for the grinding jars, this mill is even safer and easier to use.

Pulverisette 7

The Pulverisette 7 classic line features 2 positions with grinding cups of 12 or 45 ml. With an effective sample volume of 2×0.5 ml to 2×20 ml and a speed of up to 800 rpm, this mill is particularly suitable for dry and wet grinding of small sample volumes down to a final fineness < 1 µm.

Pulverisette 6

The Pulverisette 6 classic line is a planetary ball mill with 1 grinding position. A grinding cup of 500 ml or 250 ml can be placed in it. It is also possible to use two 80 ml grinding jars to reduce 2 different samples at the same time. These grinding jars give an effective sample volume of 10 to 225 ml.

Pulverisette 5

The Pulverisette 5 Classic line is a planetary ball mill available in two versions with 2 and with 4 grinding positions. Grinding cups of 80ml, 250ml and 500ml can be used to grind an effective sample volume of 10 to 4 x 225ml.

Micro ball mill

Micro-ball mills are used for grinding small sample quantities (typically 1 ml to 10 ml) to a fineness of 10-15 µm.

Pulverisette 23

This device is used for grinding very small amounts of material. The final fineness to be achieved is 10µm. In this grinding mill, the cup, balls and material are oscillated vertically at frequencies of 900 to 3000 Hz. This device is often used for grinding “forensic” materials or other applications where a very limited amount of material is available.

Pulverisette 0

The Pulverisette 0 grinds volumes up to 10 ml to a final fineness of 5 µm to 10 µm. The result is a homogeneous material that is very useful for XRF analyses because the particle size distribution is very narrow. This device is also very suitable for applications where small quantities need to be ground. The simple operation and the possibility of using the unit as a sieving machine make this Pulverisette 0 a good choice. For cryogenic grinding, this mill can be equipped with a “cryobox” filled with liquid nitrogen.

Sample preparation

Cutting Mill

Cutting mills grind a sample using a combination of cutting and friction effects. They are designed to process materials with low or medium hardness, fibrous or ductile texture, as well as polymeric materials and heterogeneous material mixtures. The versatile and robust FRITSCH Pulverisette 11, 15, 19 and 29 knife mills are quick and easy to clean. All grinding elements can be removed in seconds, without the need for any special accessories.

Pulverisette 11

The PULVERISETTE 11 silent knife mill is the ideal laboratory mill for very fast grinding and homogenisation of wet, oily and fatty samples, as well as dry, soft, semi-hard and fibrous samples, in just a few seconds. The up to 1250 watt motor and special blade, equipped with four knife blades, quickly grind samples with a high fat or water content, such as meat, gummy bears, chocolate, or even hard samples like dishwasher cubes or toys. It’s the perfect all-rounder, with a host of advantages for shredding foodstuffs, animal feed, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

Pulverisette 19 LARGE

The Pulverisette 19 LARGE is the big brother of the Pulverisette 19. This model offers all the advantages of the Pulverisette 19, but also has a larger capacity for grinding larger samples or the hardest materials. Because this mill operates at a relatively slow, adjustable speed (50-700 rpm or 300-3000 rpm), larger or hard-to-grind materials can remain in the grinding chamber for longer without the risk of burning or melting. Applications include grinding oily nuts and large quantities of polymers.

Pulverisette 19

The Pulverisette 19 is a high-performance universal knife mill with a wide range of accessories for automatic sample collection and metal-free grinding. It can be opened and cleaned very quickly, without the use of tools. This makes it ideal for laboratory work involving the grinding of many different types of sample.

Rotors with straight and V-shaped blades are available in steel, chrome-free steel and tungsten carbide (unique!). This means the machine can be used for metal-free shredding. A rotor fitted with toothed knives can be used for shredding extremely hard but ductile materials. Rotors with V-shaped blades are used for ductile materials (e.g. hardened rubber). Using straight knives with this type of material has the effect of blocking the machine.

Instead of sieve plates, this shredder uses stronger sieve cassettes.
This machine can also shred temperature-sensitive materials, thanks to the action of a cyclone-type collection system that extracts the material from the shredding chamber in a stream of air. This system also minimises the need for cleaning.

Pulverisette 15

This knife shredder is the basic model in the Fritsch catalogue. It is ideally suited to less demanding applications or materials that are easy to shred. It uses a rotor with straight knives. A stand and 60-litre collection tank are available for the Pulverisette 15 model, so that large quantities of samples can be processed.

Pulverisette 29

The FRITSCH PULVERISETTE 29 mini shredder is a compact and powerful shredder, ideal for shredding small quantities of medium-hard, soft, tough, fibrous and temperature-sensitive materials quickly and efficiently. With a variable rotor speed from 500 to 6000 rpm and a maximum feed size of 25 mm, this shredder offers reproducible results for applications in the food, plastics, textiles, agriculture, environmental analysis and pharmaceutical industries, among others.

Rotor mills

The rotor mill uses a high-speed toothed rotor that refines a tough or semi-hard sample through friction and impact. The perforated rasp that surrounds the rotor allows the sample to leave the grinding chamber of the rotor mill once it has reached the desired fineness. A hammer mill finely pounds a sample between rapidly rotating hammers. The refined sample can leave the grinding chamber through a sieve. A mortar mill is basically the automated version of manual refining in a mortar using a pestle. In the mortar mill, the distance and pressure between the mortar and pestle are adjustable. By proper material selection of mortar and pestle, contamination of the sample can be avoided.

Pulverisette 14 centrifugal rotor mill

The Pulverisette 14 centrifugal grinder is a universal mill for grinding fibrous and medium-hard materials. It is also possible to grind temperature-sensitive materials such as polymers. This is possible because of the short residence time in the grinding chamber and the cooling created by the high rotational speed of the rotor. If this cooling is still not sufficient, it is also possible to connect a cyclone extraction system. This option provides extraction of the ground material and reduces cleaning. In addition, cryogenic grinding using liquid nitrogen or solid CO2 is also possible.

Pulverisette 14 cutting and rotor mill

The FRITSCH rotor mill P-14 offers impact, shearing and cutting in one instrument – with higher performance, better cooling and is significantly quieter than comparable instruments. The powerful motor is ideal for particularly fast grinding of soft to medium-hard, brittle and fibrous materials and temperature-sensitive samples with extremely fast sample throughput, which can be further increased by using FRITSCH cyclone separators.

Its high performance makes the P-14 the ideal rotor mill for sample-scale grinding in the plastics industry.

Pulverisette 16 hammer mill

In the Pulverisette 16, the material is fed into the grinding chamber through a hopper. In the grinding chamber, the material is ground by a combination of impact, shear and friction between the rotating rotor and the fixed teeth. When the material is fine enough, it falls through a sieve (range 0.12mm to 10mm) into the collection bin. The volume of the standard collection container is 5 litres. A 30-litre container is also available. The Pulverisette 16 is available in stainless steel and cast iron. Assuming a maximum start size of 20 mm, it can grind up to 80 l/h.

Pulverisette 2 mortar grinder

The Pulverisette 2 mortar mill works on the same principle as the manual mortar. The material is ground by pressure and friction between the pestle and mortar. Both the pressure horizontal direction and also in vertical direction can be controlled. The grinding of the material can proceed in several steps to reach a final fineness. A scraper ensures that the material is homogenised and reintroduced between pestle and mortar.

Depending on the hardness of the sample and the need for metal-free grinding, different grinding arrangements are chosen. Available are, for example, tungsten carbide, agate and zirconia and steel.

Sample preparation

Jaw crushers

Jaw crushers are used for coarse grinding of brittle hard samples between a moving and fixed plate. Pieces up to 100mm x 100mm x 100mm can be reduced to a fineness of 1mm. In a disc mill, brittle samples are finely ground between a moving and fixed disc. The disc mill is the typical grinding step after the jaw crusher, and often both mills are coupled in series with each other for a one-step grind from 100mm to 0.1mm. In an oscillating disc mill, samples are crushed between fast-moving reciprocating cylinders. This mill finds its application mainly in the metal industry.

Pulverisette 1 jaw crusher

A jaw crusher is mainly used for initial coarse grinding of brittle and hard materials. Depending on the size of the sample, there is a choice between a Pulverisette 1 – model 1 with a 65mm x 65mm filler hole or a Pulverisette 1 – model 2 with a 90mm x 90mm filler hole.

Depending on the hardness of the sample, grinding plates are available in different materials. For metal-free grinding, plates in zirconium oxide are available.

There is a possibility to combine the jaw crusher with the Pulverisette 13 disc mill. Here, the material falling from the jaw crusher is collected directly between the discs of the disc mill. This makes it possible to grind from a size of 95mm to a fineness of up to 0.1mm in one step. This unique combination guarantees fast and complete grinding in the shortest possible time, resulting in analytical fineness and without any loss of sample.

Pulverisette 13 disc mill

The Pulverisette 13 grinds hard, medium-hard and brittle materials by shearing and friction. 2 discs are used in this process. The material comes between a stationary and a rotating disc that are set to a distance between 12 mm and 0.1 mm. Depending on the product to be ground, grinding discs are available in different materials to avoid metal contamination, among other things.

With a flow rate of up to 150 kg/h, this mill can be used for semi-industrial grinding. A vacuum system is available for removal of the dust fraction or for quick and easy cleaning after grinding. This grinding mill can be used in series with Fritsch jaw crushers to grind materials with dimensions of up to 95 cm x 95 cm to 0.1 mm in one continuous motion.

Pulverisette 13 disc grinder Premium

This machine is the “high tech” version of the Pulverisette 13 classic line. By automatically adjusting the distance between the plates from 0.05 mm to 12 mm, you achieve a very reproducible grind and minimal wear on the grinding plates. This unit can be combined with the jaw crusher Pulverisette 1 premium line to crush materials with dimensions of up to 95 cm x 95 cm to 0.05 mm in one continuous motion.

Pulverisette 9 oscillating disc mill

For very fast grinding of very hard laboratory samples to anaytic fineness, the oscillating disc mill is a good solution. In this mill, grinding is performed by the horizontal oscillating motion of the grinding set on a vibrating plate. The sample is ground by a combination of extremely high pressure, impact and friction.

Material characterization

Particle size & grain size

The most well-known techniques for the determination of particle size, grain size or particle size are sieve analysis and laser diffraction (wet and dry measurements).

For the determination of nanoparticles at extremely high resolution, a disk centrifuge (also known as accelerated sedimentation) is used. The size of particles in samples with high concentration up to 40% is determined by electro-acoustic attenuation techniques. Optical techniques such as dynamic image analysis are used for particle size measurement in laboratory or production environments, or as an automated alternative to sieve analysis.

Portable Raman Devices

Raman is a spectroscopic technique that uses the scattering of the monochromatic light from a laser. The laser light interacts with the inter-atomic vibrations of the molecules in the sample, and the resulting shift in energy gives a detailed fingerprint (or Raman shift spectrum) of the sample. Raman spectroscopy does not require physical contact with the sample, making it possible to measure through transparent containers without opening them.

Portable Raman Devices

Raman spectroscopy is widely used today for the identification of materials in the pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetic industries. Raman combines the advantages of FT-IR (specificity of the spectrum, so easy method development) and NIR (easy analysis – point & shoot).

The TruScan RM is a portable Raman spectrometer used for raw material identification (RMID or Raw Material Identification), finished product inspection, and counterfeit (counterfeit) control.

These lightweight, fast and highly portable Raman analysers are highly specific and allow rapid identification of raw materials and other materials within seconds. Moreover, it is possible to measure through transparent packaging such as plastic bags and glass bottles.

The TruScan handheld Raman analysers are the most widely used portable Raman devices worldwide, and are used by the top 20 pharmaceutical companies.

The TruScan portable Raman devices are GMP compliant and the software is 21 CFR part 11 compliant.

Product range

Analytical instrumentation

Analytical measuring equipment plays a crucial role in laboratories for quality control, research, and development. Benelux Scientific offers a wide range of advanced analytical equipment, supported by expert advice and technical support. Our solutions cover various analytical techniques, including metal analysis, food analysis, elemental analysis, and spectrometry.

Metal analysis

Metal analysis is essential for determining the composition and purity of metals and alloys. This is crucial for industrial applications such as aerospace, construction, automotive, etc.

For these applications, we collaborate with Bruker, a leading provider of metal analysis technology.

Food analysis

Food analysis is crucial for quality control and regulatory compliance in the food and feed industry. For nitrogen, protein, fat, and fiber analysis, we collaborate with C. Gerhardt, while CDR FoodLab provides rapid analysis devices for quality control.

Elemental analysis

Elemental analysis is an essential technique in chemistry and materials science, enabling the detection and quantification of chemical elements in various materials. For these applications, we rely on the expertise of Bruker, a market leader in elemental analysis.

Spectrometry

Spectrometry is a collective term for scientific techniques that investigate solids, liquids, and gases based on their interactions with the electromagnetic spectrum. Spectroscopic techniques are applied in materials science and analytical chemistry to determine the composition and structure of substances.

Analysis of industrial oils, lubricants, (alternative) fuels

  • Grabner: Vapor pressure, flash point and IR fuel analysis
  • Spectro Scientific: Analysis of oils and lubricants (particle count, viscosity, elemental analysis, iron ratio)
  • AD Systems: Physical properties and performance of fuels and lubricants.

These products are distributed in Belgium through our colleagues at Benelux Scientific Netherlands.
